The Ibom Deep Seaport is a flagship infrastructural project located in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

Conceived as part of the Ibom Industrial City initiative, the port is designed to handle over 100,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) vessels, making it one of the deepest and most modern seaports in West Africa.

With cutting-edge logistics infrastructure, it promises seamless integration with road, rail, and air transport networks, positioning Nigeria as a regional maritime powerhouse.

The project is strategically sited at the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean (along the Gulf of Guinea), which is a vital corridor for maritime traffic in West and Central Africa.

Countries that will benefit from the port project

The project’s location is a crucial entry point for global trade because of its closeness to major international shipping routes than many existing Nigerian ports.

Its natural depth and proximity to Equatorial waters give it year-round operability, unlike some shallow or congested ports in the region.

Beyond Nigeria, the Ibom port is also expected to serve several landlocked and coastal nations in the region.

Countries that stand to benefit significantly include:

  • Chad
  • Niger
  • Cameroon
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Gabon

The port will make imports of construction materials, oilfield equipment, and agricultural goods easier for these countries.

Others like the Central African Republic and South Sudan are also expected to leverage the port to access inland trade corridors.

Furthermore, the port could also serve as a transshipment hub for countries like Republic of Congo and Angola.

What is the economic significance of the port to the region?

When constructed, the port is expected to generate over billions of dollars in revenue annually as well as 300,000 direct and indirect jobs while boosting Nigeria’s non-oil export capacity.

Notably, it will reduce congestion at Lagos ports, cut shipping costs, and catalyze industrial growth across the Niger Delta and beyond.

For the host region, Ibom port offers a reliable, efficient, and secure trade gateway, enhancing regional integration, foreign investment inflow, and sustainable economic development.
