The Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu’s government has added an additional 2,000 megawatts (MW) to the country’s electricity supply within just two years in office.

Abdullahi made this disclosure during an interview on Channels Television on Friday.

According to him, the country’s available power supply has risen from 4,000MW to 6,000MW, marking a notable improvement in Nigeria’s historically underperforming power sector.

“The first generation of electricity in Nigeria started in 1896 or thereabouts. If for 127 years we have been able to generate only 4,000 megawatts. Then, the president came to power and gave us an extra 2,000 megawatts to the 4,000MW. That is to say, he may double it before the end of his tenure and may triple it if given another term,” Abdullahi stated.

He stressed that for Nigeria to achieve widespread and affordable access to electricity, the country needs to drastically scale up its generation capacity.

“For every household to have affordable access to electricity, Nigeria must generate 40,000 MW,” he added.

Meanwhile, official data on national grid performance as of April 25, 2025, shows that electricity generation stood at 5,148.34MW, indicating a gradual climb from previous years.

However, an independent report by RMI released this year shows Nigeria’s national grid supplies less than 30% of the country’s electricity demands, leaving over 100 million people without access or unreliable access to electricity.
