China has donated 3,900 solar kits to Togo as part of its “Africa Solar Belt” initiative, aiming to support the country’s energy transition and help achieve universal electricity access by 2030.

The donation, announced in Lomé on Thursday, 6 November 2025, is targeted at rural households not connected to the national grid.

Officials say the photovoltaic kits will provide electricity to over 20,000 Togolese, enhancing rural electrification and promoting low-carbon development.

Robert Eklo, Togo’s Minister Delegate for Energy, emphasized the kits’ role in environmental protection and sustainable growth.

The Ministry of Energy plans to train local technicians to ensure proper installation and maintenance.

Chinese Ambassador Min Wang commended Togo’s climate efforts, stating the donation reflects China’s commitment to strengthening Sino-African cooperation in renewable energy.

Togo, a West African country with less than nine million people, has already achieved a 70% electricity access rate by the end of 2024, thanks to various initiatives supported by international partners.

The French speaking nation was the second largest importer of firewood from Nigeria in the first quarter of 2025, after Benin Republic.
